Over the past several years the Department of Taxes has focused on extensive modernization efforts, advancing our technologies, communications with taxpayers, practices, and workforce development.
What We Are Currently Working On:
Using Technology to Process Taxes More Efficiently
We have converted many paper tax forms into searchable and fillable PDF forms, with many resources now online for filing, paying, and viewing your tax accounts. Our myVTax integrated tax system continues to expand and both corporate and business income taxes can now be filed and processed electronically.
Improving Communications with Taxpayers
We continue to assist taxpayers, and foster partnerships with Vermont organizations and business trade groups. Our fact sheets, e-newsletters, and website help taxpayers stay up-to-date on changes to forms and tax policy. We have developed materials tailored to individual taxpayers, tax practitioners and businesses. The Vermont Tax Advisory Board and Tax Technical Working Group whose members represent the various stakeholders in our communities meet regularly with key members of our department to provide feedback for many of our projects.
Capturing Currently Unreported Taxes to Close the Tax Gap
A Tax Gap is the difference between taxes owed to the state, and actual taxes paid, and our data warehouse discovers cases where taxpayers owe taxes. Our campaigns for businesses to voluntarily disclose use tax owed, Know What You Owe, and the Top 100 lists of delinquent taxpayers, also brings in revenue owed to the state.
Attracting and Developing the Best Possible Workforce
We continue to support employee training and development, and reclassified more than half of departmental positions, in committing to our modernization efforts to enhance the taxpayer experience.
We are dedicated to refining technologies, efficiency, communication, and workforce development, in order to best promote departmental growth and above all, assistance to Vermont taxpayers.
