Claiming A Vermont Refund
You must file a Form IN-111, Vermont Income Tax Return to claim a refund of Vermont withholding or estimated tax payments.
You have up to three years from the due date of the return, including extensions, to file a claim for overpayment of tax due.

Although we try to process your refund within 8-12 weeks, it can take longer. The Department continues to experience a rise in attempted tax refund fraud. This is an alarming trend that mirrors what is happening in other states and at the federal level. State revenue departments and the IRS are implementing procedures to help protect the taxpayer’s money.
What You Can Do
Vermont taxpayers will be asked to provide a Vermont driver’s license or state-issued identification card number when filing. If the information is not provided, the Department cannot verify your identity. This may delay the processing of a refund.
“One of the most concerning frauds we see is the filing of false tax returns in order to generate a refund. We have controls in place to identify suspicious refund requests. In some cases, the Department will need to take additional steps to ensure that the refunds we issue are going to the right person. We ask that taxpayers work with us as we balance the goals of customer service, speedy refunds, and fraud prevention. Providing your Vermont driver’s license number and responding to verification letters helps protect your refund and prevent fraud,” says Commissioner Kaj Samsom.
Many of the precautions we take have resulted in increased processing time, but we believe they are worth it. If we suspect fraud is being committed against you, we will send you a letter requesting verification of your identification. Please respond to our letter as soon as possible.
The Department started processing returns the first week of February. However, many returns were held until we received W-2 withholding reports from employers, which were due on Jan. 31.

What Information Can I Expect to Hear When I Call?
If you contact the Department, we typically will not be able to provide you with any detailed information about the status of your refund. The tax examiners on the phone see the same status that you see when you check myVTax.
If you chose direct deposit for your refund, you may see your refund a few days after your status has been updated to “We’ve released your refund.” Your financial institution may have additional processing times.
If you will be receiving your refund by check, then it may take a few weeks to receive your refund by mail.
