Important 2016 Filing Season Updates

Identity theft and refund fraud continue to be on the rise. We are taking important steps to help detect and prevent refund fraud. The Vermont Tax Department has partnered with the IRS other state tax agencies, and companies and trade association in the tax and financial services industries to establish stronger security measures, particularly in filing online, including validation of identity and return information at the time of filing.

Taxpayers should be aware that the department is implementing new measures to combat personal income tax fraud for the 2016 tax filing season, and that they may experience delays in receiving their refunds. The department may hold some returns until it receives W-2 withholding reports from employers, which were due on Feb. 29.

For more information, please see the Department’s press release on this topic.

Review our legislative updates to find out what tax law changes affect the 2016 filing season.
