Corporate Tax Analyst IV, V, and VI 

Montpelier, VT | Application Deadline: 4/03/2024

The successful candidate will have experience with complex multi-state corporate tax and partnership returns. This position will be involved in the informal review and settlement of corporate and pass-through entity appeals.  Work will involve tax research and generating written communications with CPA's, financial accounting representatives, and lawyers representing taxpayers of both small and large businesses.  These communications may include investigating the facts and case law surrounding an assessment and developing the Department's position in collaboration with our Legal Unit.

Tax Compliance Officer I, II, and III

Montpelier, VT | Application Deadline: 3/31/2024

The primary role of the Tax Compliance Officers is to collect unpaid taxes on behalf of the state via phone, or otherwise. We strive to educate taxpayers to promote and achieve voluntary compliance; ensuring all information provided to the public is accurate and in alignment with the Departments mission and core values.

Tax Compliance Officers arrange formal payment agreements, propose settlements, and when appropriate, waive selected penalties.  Other tasks performed: include but are not limited to the establishment of personal liability and initiating bank/wage garnishment orders and property liens.

IT Systems Developer I, II, and III

Montpelier, VT | Application Deadline: 4/03/2024

As part of our development team, you will be expected to work closely with the business team to analyze, design, develop and test their solutions. Experience with MS SQL Server, Visual Studio 2022, Microsoft Development tools and object-oriented programming languages is beneficial. Working knowledge of database systems, technical documentation and the application development life cycle is a plus.

We have a busy work environment with a supportive team of experienced developers, and we are seeking candidates with the motivation to contribute to our team and increase their knowledge at the same time. Tax systems require continuous maintenance and changes, and this position is an opportunity to acquire new skills as there are several new projects on our schedule this year. In particular this position will be one of the team assigned to support the Property Valuation and Review section of the Tax department, working on the critical mission of developing property tax automation in our GenTax environment.

Tax Examiner II, III, and IV

Our Compliance Division is seeking a talented individual who is interested in supporting public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with review of taxpayer records for compliance and provide education to taxpayers. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient, and have a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration. The ideal candidate will also have strong internal and external communication skills to work supportively with members of the Compliance Division and the public. The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. We value service, integrity, and employee growth, as we aim to support Vermont communities effectively and efficiently. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff.

Tax Analyst II, III, IV, and V

Our Tax Analysts will have extensive interaction with taxpayers and/or their representatives through both verbal and written communication and will be responsible for educating taxpayers as to their proper filing requirements. The Tax Analyst will help to resolve filing and billing statement issues. This position will be involved with the registration of new accounts and the processing of filed returns. Tax Analysts will be cross trained in several different tax types and will be exposed to various internal and external training programs depended upon current level of knowledge. This position will report directly to the Taxpayer Services Section Chief.

Tax Field Auditor I, II, and III

St. Johnsbury, VT | Application Deadline: 4/08/2024

The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and provide education to taxpayers. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient, and self-motivated and have a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration. The ideal candidate will also have strong internal and external communication skills to work supportively with members of the Compliance Division and the public.
 
This is a home-based position. A successful applicant will be eligible for an office allowance and will be reimbursed for allowable business travel expenses. The applicant will need to have reliable personal transportation to attend periodic meetings in the Montpelier main office and to conduct on-site audits, generally located in Orleans, Caledonia, and Essex Vermont Counties. Applicants residing in or within reasonable proximity of Orleans or Caledonia counties is preferred.
