April 15 is Vermont Income Tax and Homestead Declaration Filing Due Date

MONTPELIER, Vt.- The Vermont Department of Taxes reminds Vermont taxpayers that the due date for federal and Vermont personal income tax returns is April 15, 2025. This deadline also applies to corporate income tax and fiduciary income tax returns for calendar year filers. Homestead Declarations and Property Tax Credit Claims should also be filed by April 15, and eligible Vermont renters can apply for a Renter Credit when they file their Vermont tax returns.

“The most common question we get this time of year is ‘Where is my refund?’” said Vermont Tax Commissioner Bill Shouldice. “The fastest way to get your refund is to file electronically and select direct deposit. We recommend that taxpayers take a look at Free File, which allows many Vermonters to file their federal and Vermont returns electronically for free.”

Free File is a partnership between the IRS and tax software companies to help taxpayers prepare their tax returns at no cost. Vermonters with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less should check the Tax Year 2024 Free File Offers for more information.

Taxpayers can check the status of their return, file their Homestead Declaration, claim a Property Tax Credit or claim a Renter Credit online directly on myVTax, Vermont’s free, secure taxpayer portal (myvtax.vermont.gov).
“We also want Vermonters to know about tax credits that can put money back into their pockets even if they don’t owe any tax,” continued Shouldice. “But they need to file to claim them.”

  • The Vermont Child Tax Credit gives eligible Vermont filers with children aged five or younger a tax credit up to $1,000 per child.
  • Vermont’s Child and Dependent Care Credit is 72 percent of the federal credit.
  • Vermont’s Earned Income Tax Credit is 38 percent of the federal credit.

All Vermont residents, including those who do not have a Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number, may file for these credits.

Vermont taxpayers who can’t meet the April 15 personal income tax filing deadline may extend their filing to Oct. 15, 2025, but must still pay tax owed by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. Vermonters filing an extension should still file their Homestead Declaration by April 15.

Taxpayers who have questions about filing Vermont income taxes should check the department’s website or may call 802-828-2865 Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for assistance.
