The Vermont Department of Taxes would like to remind Vermonters that the deadline to file a Homestead Declaration, Property Tax Credit Claim, and Renter Credit Claim is October 16, 2023. All Vermont homestead owners must file a Homestead Declaration annually even if they are not seeking an income-based property tax credit.
You may be eligible for a Property Tax Credit if you meet the following eligibility requirements:
-
Your property qualifies as a homestead as of April 1, and you have filed a 2023 Homestead Declaration;
-
You were domiciled in Vermont for the entire 2022 calendar year;
-
You were not claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer; and
-
You meet the household income criteria.
The Renter Credit program allows renters to receive a credit based on fair market rent in their county if they meet the following eligibility requirements:
-
You were domiciled in Vermont for the entire 2022 calendar year;
-
You were not claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer;
-
You rented in Vermont for at least six months, although the six months do not need to be consecutive; and
-
You meet the income eligibility limits based on your family size.
By law, Homestead Declarations and Renter Credit claims cannot be accepted after October 16, 2023. Homeowners who have filed a 2023 Homestead Declaration by October 16 have until March 15, 2024, to file their Property Tax Credit, but any Property Tax Credit claims received after October 16, 2023, are reduced by $150.
Homestead Declarations, Property Tax Credit Claims, and Renter Credit Claims may be filed electronically using tax software, a tax preparer, or on the Department’s taxpayer portal at myVTax.vermont.gov located under “Returns.” Taxpayers having trouble filing may call (802) 828-2865 for assistance.
More information about these credits and their eligibility requirements is available on the Department’s website at tax.vermont.gov.
